Mrs Joan Barker
The funeral of Joan Barker was held on Friday August 17th at Ipswich Crematorium. It was attended by her family, and a large number of her friends from the world of dogs. Many societies were represented including: the Hound Club of East Anglia, East of England Afghan Club, East of England Golden Retriever Club, East Anglian branch of the Bearded Collie Club, East of England Ladies' Kennel Society, Lowestoft, Oulton Broad & District CS, Great Yarmouth, Gorleston & District CS, Suffolk Agricultural Association (Dog Section) and of course, many members of the Suffolk Kennel Association of which Joan had been Secretary for 25 years.
The eulogy was given by her son Stephen Barker. He spoke of the many letters of condolence he had received. All mentioned the great respect in which she was held, that she did not seek glory and that she was always ready to give help and advice. Over the years Joan had acted as mentor to many newly appointed Show Secretaries.
Joan's first dog was a St. Bernard, Stephen recalled when he was a little boy a 15 stone dog was like having a pony in the house. Joan also had an interest in art and was a talented artist. In the mid 1960s Joan purchased her first Afghan and both exhibited and raced them with some financial success. She was elected the Suffolk Kennel Association Secretary in 1976, a post she held for the rest of her life.
Salukis came into her life in the 1980s and were exhibited with some success. However the achievements of Toula Lucas handling Tealby Sabaah of Tezeen in the Junior Handling ring gave Joan enormous pride and pleasure.
Joan, a lady of elegance, matched by her elegant dogs will be sadly missed by all her many friends.
