The
first ever APDT practical educational course was completed
in June, with 25 APDT members passing the OCN accreditation.
The course took place over a period of six months and students
enjoyed lectures from a wide range of tutors on a variety
of topics, including Tony Orchard on presentation skills,
Val Strong on diet and behaviour, Pam Mackinnon on training
rehomed dogs and John Rogerson on difficult dogs in class.
Each unit incorporated a range of learning activities including
experiential and open learning, directed reading, written
work, and topic presentation - all geared towards practical
class instruction for APDT members and the Open College Network
accreditation.
At the same time, the preliminary practical course saw another
18 students complete two weekends of introductory practical
training sessions and interactive lectures. This course is
open to all and is designed to focus on practical skills for
those who are assisting in classes or hope to become class
instructors.
