A
sports bet gone awry has resulted in a donation of £5,000
to the Retired Greyhound Trust - the industry charity dedicated
to finding homes for greyhounds at the end of their racing
careers.
The money will be used to help fund the Trust's 'Healthcheck'
programme for dogs which are being re-homed. The aim of Healthcheck
is to ensure that all greyhounds are neutered, have a current
vaccination certificate, that their teeth and gums are clean
and healthy, and that they are free of parasites before starting
life in their new homes.
Amanda Ainsworth, Manager at the Trust, was presented with
a cheque at the offices of Talk Radio after Talk Radio's head,
Kelvin Mackenzie, secured the donation from Coral bookmakers.
Coral offered the money to the Trust by way of conciliation
to Mr Mackenzie, who had earlier been refused a payout on
a football bet which Coral had accepted in error.
Commenting on the donation, Amanda Ainsworth said: "Coral's
donation is a great boost to our programme to ensure that
retired greyhounds are in the fittest of health when they
start their lives in their new adopted homes.
"We are always keen to hear from people who feel that
they could adopt a greyhound as a pet. They make great companions
and are actually quite low maintenance animals."
