Ballyphelan Bran Beag
THE
Irish Wolfhound Ballyphelan Bran Beag (Strider) died on Monday
18th November. He was well known and admired throughout the
world of dogs and very well thought of by most championship
show judges, not just for his success but also for his personality;
few dogs want to please so much, or came alive in the big ring,
as he did.
He was bred by Pam & John Sumner out of a bitch sired by
my Ainsea Rifleman (10 RCCs), put to the Sumner's Ballyphelan
Celtic Charm, who won two CCs.but like Rifleman never quite
made it, but together they produced Ch. B. Tarlach Dubh and
Ch. B Tiger Lily, Lily was mated to Ch. Bokra George Caredig
(George was a prolific Stud Dog top sire in the breed for numerous
years) together they produced Strider's litter.
His achievements include, his first win as a puppy on his second
outing awarded a RCC one of the youngest champions in the breed
at only 19 months, at three straight shows, Top Irish Wolfhound
three times, Runner up to the Breed Record Holder, with 37 CCs
and 25 RCCs BIS Windsor 1998, two Breed Club BIS, Breed Club
CC and RCCs. Group wins and always placed, never ignored, Champion
Stakes finalist on three occasions, BOB and a Group win on his
first outing as a veteran at Midland Counties 2000.
He never managed to win even a CC at Crufts, but was proud that
his son The Diplomat did. He sadly was not a profuse stud dog,
but his few offspring are quality, himself one of a litter of
four champions, he produced with Ch. Ainsea Dusty Sim, a litter
of two UK champions, one Norwegian and one French Champion,
who have all gone on the produce champion offspring. He also
has some quality children who have done well in the ring and
have gone on produce quality stock. He has some eight month
old children in Holland.
His company and great personality will be missed more than anything
else. A truly "GREAT DOG".
