Artists to depict "The Wonderful World of Purebred Dogs"
NEW YORK (July 9, 2003) - The American Kennel Club and The Iams Company are proud to announce the first annual competition to select original artwork for the AKC/Eukanuba National Invitational Championship commemorative poster.
Artists may enter any original two-dimensional painting or drawing reflecting the theme: "The Wonderful World of Purebred Dogs." The artwork may incorporate or focus on a variety of subject matter including AKC events, the human/canine bond, breeding programs or the setting for this year's event (Long Beach, California).
The deadline for submissions is September 25th, 2003. Ten initial finalists will be selected by experts at the AKC Museum of the Dog from all entries received, and then the grand prize winning artwork will be chosen from those finalists by a panel of judges in October. Grand prize judges include Karen LeFrak, a dog enthusiast and member of the New York State Council on the Arts; Anne Radice, Ph.D, breeder, exhibitor, and former Acting Chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts, Director of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and Curator of the Architect of the US Capitol; and Professor Iris Cornelia Love, a world-renowned archaeologist, lecturer, photographer and author, as well as long-time Dachshund breeder.
The grand prize winner will receive $1,000 and a three day/two night trip for two to the 2003 AKC/ Eukanuba National Invitational Championship in Long Beach, CA (including air fare and hotel). The winning artwork will be used in a commemorative poster that will be sold at this year's event as well as on AKC's web site.
"We are pleased to launch this competition to choose the artwork for our first commemorative poster," said Ron Menaker, AKC Chairman. "We hope that the poster will become a collectible among dog enthusiasts and that dog lovers across the country will look forward to a new AKC/Eukanuba National Invitational Championship event poster each year."
