Brian Staveley - a tribute

A funeral service was held at St Michaels Church, Stanwix, Carlisle on Wednesday 9th July for Mr Brian Staveley (Dykeside), long time secretary of The Border Terrier Club, who passed away on the 3rd of July.

The canine world was well represented at the service with people from the length and breadth of the country including a large representation of Border Terrier people. The Border Terrier Club committee was almost fully represented and the regional Border Terrier Clubs were also well represented.

During the address, special mention was made of Brian's 25 years of service as secretary of The Border Terrier Club and of Marjorie and Brian's many involvements in other community canine activities, in particular The Carlisle & District Canine Society on which they had served for 28 years - a group of representatives from this society were in attendance. Brian also awarded CCs in the breed, one of the highlights being his appointment at Crufts in 1996.

Special personal tributes to Brian from family and friends were also read. Perhaps a fitting one to mention came from an American member of The Border Terrier Club:

"To me, Brian was a gentle giant, standing about 6' 5", with pure white hair and twinkling eyes. He always had a warm smile and friendlly demeanor. He was the epitome of an English gentleman. We have lost a great one. Goodbye friend, I'll miss you"

Brian and Marjorie had been married for almost 50 years and always worked together in their many canine involvements and in particular, The Border Terrier Club.

The world of dogs has lost a great ambassador with the passing of Brian Staveley.
