Eighth
Canine Biathlon
THE ROTARY Club of Bungay, Suffolk, is to stage their eighth
canine biathlon on Sunday 13th July.
The success and popularity of previous events should ensure
that this year will see another challenging and enjoyable day
for dog, handler and spectator.
The Biathlon also serves as a fund-raising event for charity
and in 2002 a total of £3,818 was raised by the thirty-four
competitors.
The base for this event will be the Outney Meadow Caravan Park,
Bungay, and much of the three mile cross country course will
cove parts of Bungay Common.
The course will be marked and will feature 22 tests and obstacles
ranging from A-frame, hurdles, dog-walk, article searches, sendaway
and swimming the river Waveney. The handler, whilst the dog
is in a stay position, will be tested on .22 rifle shooting,
tennis ball throwing and netball.
Scoring will be based on faults for each test. The course-time
will only apply to competitors with equal number of faults.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, the winning individual
entry, the best individual performance, a ladies trophy and
a veterans trophy.
Past entries have seen strong representations form working trials,
agility and gundog fraternities, as well as a team from Suffolk
Constabulary. All participate to raise money for charity.
Entries can either be from individuals or from individuals or
from teams. Entry fees for each competitor will be £8.00.
A team should consist of two or three participants. Individuals
and teams will be issued with sponsorship forms and 50% can
go to the charity of the competitors choice.
This unique event has become part of the working dogs
summer calendar, it combines elements of obedience, agility
and working trials as well as testing the handlers!
