On Thursday 9th September 2004 this year’s Petplan Junior Stakes Finals will take place, being held for the second time in conjunction with the Blenheim Petplan International Horse Trials. Last year’s move to Blenheim, where Petplan remains the title sponsor, proved a resounding success with exhibitors and guests alike.
The competition actually takes place in a special marquee erected at the waterside, and on the Thursday visitors will later have the opportunity to view the dressage competition, as this will be ongoing in the main arena throughout the day. Last year the dressage proved very popular with Petplan’s guests, as the control and accuracy required by this discipline can be appreciated by the dog showing fraternity.
Finalists from thirteen general Championship shows will meet at Blenheim, one dog and one bitch from each, where the twenty-six dogs will be judged using the unique Petplan points system, and where three approved Best in Show judges will be asked to give each points for Breed Type, Conformation and Movement, then having the added facility to give extra points to the final five for "star quality". This system has proved highly successful over the years and has produced winners that have gone on to distinguish themselves in the conformation ring.
With the winners from Paignton, East on England, Bournemouth, Leeds and the Welsh Kennel Club still unknown, a finalist from the Gundog group has yet to emerge. The Toy and Working Groups have produced one finalist each, whilst there are two from both the Utility and Terrier groups. By far the most successful groups have been the Hound and Pastoral, both of which have provided five finalists apiece.
This year the judges who will officiate at the Petplan Grand Final are Bryn Cadogan, Dennis Coxall and Mrs Maureen Micklethwaite.
Petplan looks forward to welcoming its guests to Blenheim where all are anticipating another memorable finish to its annual stakes’ winners.
