The KC Junior Warrant award is earned by young stock aged from 6 – 18 months through a point system, and those coveted letters ‘JW’ indicate that the exhibit has shown the potential to become a dog of note in the future as it matures.
Once it is confirmed that the letters JW can be placed after the dog’s name then they compete at one of the nominated shows in September to qualify for the semi finals at Discover Dogs in London.
The final usually follows the semi finals on the same day, but this has now changed, and the finals will be held at Crufts 2004 showing the prestige that this title is intended to confer.
The competition co-ordinators, Miss Kelly Prosser, Mrs Shirley Cowan and Mrs Sylvia Lyus worked very hard to bring about this exciting competition on the first day of Discover Dogs, under the watchful eye of the Chief Steward for both rings Mr Gerald King. Both the rings ran very smoothly too.
The judge in Ring 1 was Mr Jack Bispham and in Ring 2 it was Mr Steve Hall. Both of these judges are well known and highly respected BIS judges who are specialists in the Working group.
A total of 52 dogs were qualified and entered for these semi finals and only a handful were absent; unfortunately this included the only Toy to have qualified so that group was not represented in the competition, although the remaining groups were all well balanced by their representatives.
The same procedure applied to each ring, with only three qualifiers in the ring at any one time until each judge had put each exhibit through its paces and all the dogs had been examined. All the exhibits were then returned to the appropriate ring for Mr Bispham and Mr Hall to make their shortlists of 10 dogs in each of the two rings.
Mr Bispham shortlisted a Golden Retriever, WHWT, Whippet, Leonberger, Beagle, GSP, Miniature Poodle, Shetland Sheepdog, Dobermann and a Lhasa Apso.
In Ring 2 Mr Hall’s shortlist included a Beardie, Dobermann, WHWT, Shar Pei, Lhasa Apso, Siberian Husky, German Spitz (Mittel), American Cocker, Shih Tzu and a Rottweiler.
There was a round of applause as all the other qualifiers left the ring.
Each dog was given another look over and moved again by their respective judges, giving them a second chance to show off their qualities before each judge took their shortlist down to their final qualifiers for the Grand Final.
Mr Jack Bispham put through the Goldie, Nativegold Comanche JW owned and brd by Mr & Mrs Bennet, Mr & Mrs Didio’s homebred Whippet Kushka’s Firefly JW and Mrs Hodges’ homebred Leonberger Stormchaser Zhivago’s Love JW (ShCM); he also selected the Sheltie Cresteak Call Me Bond of Fernfrey JW owned by Mrs Sauders and bred by Mr & Mrs Bail and the fifth dogs to go through from Ring 1 was The Lhasa Apso Rossgilde Tis A Dream JW (ShCM).
Mr Steve Hall had also put each dog through its paces for a second time before deciding on Danjemar Emerald Beauty at Jezeve JW, the Rottweiler bred by Mr & Mrs Jones and owned by Miss Watts. The Shih Tzu Ch. Chanikos Just A Dream JW owned and bred by Miss Spooner was also joined by Mr & Mrs Spaham’s American Cocker Spaniel Goldenmist Hide and Seek at Chianja JW bred by Mrs Petty. The homebred Lhasa Shardlow Raggletaggle JW (ShCM) of Mr & Mrs Paradise followed through and the final dog to be going to the Grand Final is another homebred dog, the WHWT of Mr Griffiths, Karamynd High As Kite JW.
This year’s Junior Warrant Finalists are:
Mr DJ & Mrs LM Bennett’s Golden Retriever Nativegold Comanche from Margate, Kent; Mrs EJ & Miss MV Didio’s Whippet Kushka’s Firefly from Pershore, Worcs; Mrs J Griffiths’ West Highland White Terrier Karamynd High As A Kite from Leebotwood, Shropshire; Mrs L Hodge’s Leonberger Stormchaser Zhivago’s Love (ShCM) from Buntingford, Herts; Mr A & Mrs JL Paradise’s Lhasa Apso Shardlow Ragtaggle Gyspy (ShCM) from Devizes, Wiltshire; Mrs I Saunders’ Shetland Sheepdog Cresteak CallMe Bond of Fernfrey from Newark, Notts; Mr RM & Mrs F Scholes’ Lhasa Apso Rossgilde Tis A Dream (ShCM) from Malpas, Cheshire; Mr IJ & Mrs C Sparham’s American Cocker Spaniel Goldenmist Hide And Seek at Chianja from Great Haywood, Staffs; Miss A Spooner’s Shih Tzu Chanikos Justa Dream from Basildon, Essex; Miss R Watts’ Rottweiler Danjemar Emerald Beauty at Jezeve from Aylsham, Norfolk.
