My first Pup of The Year. I was impressed with the venue and appreciate the hard work needed by the Combined Canine Club committee to make this a real showcase event. Everything certainly appeared to run smoothly and everyone I spoke to certainly enjoyed themselves. What better way to spend the evening than in the company of friends watching quality dogs.

Judges for the event were Mr Michael Forte, Mrs Rita McCarry-Beattie and Mrs Helen Hegarty from Ireland and Mr Kari Jarvinen from Finland. There were 21 dogs present, 3 absentee’s, for the preliminary judging by the Irish judges would decided the 8 finalists for the evening.

They were Ann Taggart’s 16 month old West Highland White Terrier, Cooley Razzle Dazzle Them. Chandler qualified at the Irish Kennel Club Show and was handled by Ann’s daughter Sinead.

Stephen Lloyd’s Lhasa Apso, Owenavera Eye Candy, who qualified at Kilkenny & District. Candy at 17 months already has several Green Stars and a Group 3 placing to her name. Roger Bayliss’s Miniature Poodle, Kertellas It’s a Secret, qualified at Dun Laoghaire. Secret as she is known at home is 15 months old. Chad, the 18 months old homebred Bull Terrier, Coxgall Me Fein, of Ger & Lynda Cox’s qualified at Tralee & District. James Newman & Sean Carroll’s, Pomeranian, Belliver Latest Creation qualified at Bull Breeds. Vivien, at not yet a year old was Best in Show at Newtownards and has 2 CC’s to her name.

Qualifying at Portadown was Ashling Connelly’s homebred Bichon Frise, Ashmair Secret Wish. Poppy, now 13 months was sired by Ashling’s Crufts CC wining dog. The Miniature Schnauzer, Whitecliff Achtung Baby, owned and bred by Paul Scanlon and Monica Betts qualified at Cloghran.

At 13 months Ali is already a Best in Show winner having won at the Combined Canine Club Easter Classic the day before. The eighth finalist and last dog to qualify for the event at Dublin Dog Show was the 13 month old Doberman Pinscher, Aritaur Hipnotique, owned by Jewel Fleming. Zena was handled by Billy Henderson.

After dinner Mr Kari Jarvinen the judge for the finale was introduced and the 8 dogs took to the floor. Kari made his selection and final placements were announced in reverse order down to the last 2 dogs. The West Highland White Terrier and the Miniature Poodle. Kari moved each of them dog again. “Once more round” and it was decision time. Winner of Pup of the Year 2004 was Roger Bayliss’s Miniature Poodle, Kertellas Its a Secret.
