Mrs Vera Hutchinson
(Alverry German Shepherds)
It IS with great sadness that I report the death of Mrs Vera Hutchinson, Vice-President of Manchester Dog Show Society, on June 14th 2005.
For the last two years Vera had not been well due to being on dialysis because of kidney failure.
During that period, she found it hard to attend any dog shows, not even getting to the Manchester Dog Championship Show at its new home at Stafford.
Vera had served Manchester Dog Society for many years working under the society’s last couple of secretaries. In the office at the Championship Show, she was then elected to serve on the committee, being one of the first ladies elected to the committee along with the President, Mrs Val Foss; after years of a male dominated society, this was an honour she had always treasured.
Vera, along with husband Alf, owned Carr Moss Lane Boarding Kennels and had many years of successfully showing and breeding German Shepherd Dogs, her first champion was Ch. Dark Rosalind of Elpyk, she also owned the great champion dog Ch. Sparticus of Hendrawens, a dog she constantly talked about and loved greatly. The last champion she bred was Ch. Alverry’s Sparkler who won the working group at LKA.
I was fortunate enough to attend many dog shows with Vera and her enthusiasm over the years was infectious and never changed, she loved meeting up with her many friends and watching the development of the breed she loved. She was always willing to help and give advice to many breed people, she kept involved with breed clubs in her area like the BGSDTS, the Wigan Alsatian Club where she was invited to be the referee at their Championship Shows and the North Wales Alsatian Club, a show that she never liked to miss, and even this April still asked if we were attending their open show though she knew she was too ill to attend.
In 1999, she retired from judging after she judged Crufts alongside her very good friend Mr Eric Summerfield, this was the highlight of her judging career which took her to so many different countries.
My ever-lasting memory will just be her great friendship and loyalty, she was always there when I needed her and she will be sadly missed.
