Miss Kathie Kidd

The Lancashire Heeler world has been shocked and saddened by the unexpected death on 17th March of Kathie Kidd, a stalwart of the breed for many years. She had been ill for several months, but, typically, had not wanted anyone to make a fuss.  She was seventy one.

Kathie had been the Breed Correspondent with Our Dogs for many years and rarely missed a week, even submitting a column which was published on the day she died. She was the author of ‘The First Book of the Lancashire Heeler’ which was reprinted in 2002, the original of which has long been out of print, and is now a collector’s item.  She was a former Chairman of the Lancashire Heeler Club, and held several positions on the Committee, also producing many editions of the Club’s newsletter.

In 1988 Kathie’s Acremead Biscuit of Kalo, known affectionately as Jackie, was Best of Breed from the first Lancashire Heeler classes to be scheduled at Crufts. Jackie was owned in partnership with her late mother Barbara, and bred by the late Gwen Mackintosh, a former President of the Lancashire Heeler Club, whose enthusiasm for the breed  was instrumental in helping gain Kennel Club recognition.

In 1991 Kathie judged Heelers at the Crufts Centenary show, and in 2001 awarded C.C’s at the Lancashire Heeler Club Championship Show. This was to be her last judging appointment.

However, Kathie’s interest in dogs was not confined to Heelers, and she also had many friends in the Pembroke Corgi world.  She always had a kind word for everyone, and will be sadly missed not only for her enthusiasm, but her encyclopaedic knowledge of dogs in general, and Heelers in particular.

Sarah Whybrow and I visited Kathie on Monday, when she asked us to collect her last Heeler, Fly, as she was finding it increasingly difficult to care for her in the manner she would have wished. 

We did not realise even then that the end would be so near.  Such was the dignity of this lady, that even though she was in considerable pain and discomfort, she insisted that we have tea from the finest china. 

I feel privileged to have known someone who has been such a part of the history of the breed.
