Int Ch, Multi Ch, European Ch and now Ch Reata’s Cosmopolitan
At Midland Counties Championship show, a dog based in Greece became the first ever from that country to win its UK title.
The Old English Sheepdog, five year old Reata’s Cosmopolitan, is a much travelled dog with titles in many European countries. He was the World Winner in 2001 when the World Show was held in Portugal, a very unusual win for such a young dog in this breed. He is a Best in Show winner in Greece, Italy, Hungary, Czechia, Austria and Croatia and has won the official FCI titles of International Ch, Multi Ch and European Ch.
Several British OES breeders had seen Cosmo winning in Europe and expressed an interest in using him at stud. Bred in Croatia, by the highly successful Davor Javor, his pedigree is predominantly Lameda Zottels, but he also carries some outcross breeding from central Europe.
After much discussion, Cosmo’s owner Nikolas Kanales, who divides his time between Athens and the island of Paros, agreed that Cosmo could come to the UK for some months, and that he would stay with Helen Harris who owns the Beauvallon Old English Sheepdogs in Kent.
Cosmo arrived at the beginning of the summer, Helen having sent her house-dog on holiday to friends in Wales, and so the Greek visitor moved in to Beauvallon, taking over the household as if "to the manor born".
As Cosmo was having a UK holiday Nikolas felt that it might be an idea to try for his UK title and so he was entered for a few shows. Nikolas has flown over to show him at each. At the parent club’s Championship show on 7th August, Cosmo won his first CC and also BIS under specialist judge Irene Crane-Duplock. His second CC and again BOB came at Darlington under Brenda Banbury. That day Cosmo went on to greater things by winning the Pastoral Group under Luis Pinto Texeira from Portugal.
At Midland Counties Britt Marie Young was awarding CCs for the first time in OES and Cosmo was entered in a red hot Open Dog class. He finished up taking the CC & BOB, thus adding his UK Championship to his various other titles. More was to come as, again, he topped the Pastoral Group, this time under Ferelith Somerfield.
Much as Nikolas Kanales was thrilled at Cosmo’s great success, it posed a problem as he needed to be in Athens on Sunday for a business meeting which could not be altered, consequently a handler for Cosmo in the BIS ring had to be found.
Eventually it was agreed that Lee Cox of the Vanitonia Poodles should be asked to show Cosmo, and the two bonded instantly, Cosmo showing for Lee in the big ring as if he had known him all his life.
As a sire Cosmo has already more than made his mark. He is presently the Top OES Sire for the year in Germany, and four of his children – home-bred by Nikolas in the same litter - have won spectacularly including Aryakas Cosmo Junior, the undocked son who recently won BIS at a European specialty show under the UK’s Michaela Hall.
Cosmo’s first UK- born children are already on the ground, and after a very successful summer he plans to return home to Greece for Christmas.
