In the words of the song... this could be the last time!
Bolton Canine Society have been holding their traditional New Year’s Day show for more years than we care to remember; memories of the old Silverwell Street venue are still fresh in many people’s minds writes Mike Hardman.
The days when we used to get 1000 dogs entered are in the deep and distant past. Folk round here still talk about the rum and coffee served on arrival to warm the insides, so I am reliably informed. Happy days!
We are sure their can’t be many present day top notch judges who haven’t judged Best in Show on New Year’s day at one time or another. Unfortunately, in some respects, we live in a commercial world with commercial values, which is why we have taken the decision to move our show away from January 1st. The new owners of the venue have increased the cost of hiring the centre to more than double what we have been paying in the past, add to that the general trend in falling entries at Open shows, we cannot sustain such an increase if we wish to stay in the Bolton area.
So, after much deliberation and soul searching, the committee have decided that from 2007 the show will be held on the first weekend after the New Year, the 2007 show will be held on Saturday 6th January where our esteemed Best in show judge, Mrs Liz Stannard, will preside.
On behalf of the committee of Bolton Canine Society we hope you will join us on this last New Year’s Day show and make it a memorable one for all the right reasons. We would like to thank all our "regulars" who have braved the elements (and the alcohol!) to come along each year to share the New Year celebrations with us. Our thanks go out also to the small band of helpers who turn out year after year to assist in running the show: Mrs Eileen Russell, Mrs Ann Brown, Mr Michael Coulson, Barry "Badges", Marjorie & Arthur on the door…….without these people we would not have a show!
See you on New Years Day!
Mr J B Townsend, Mr D Unsworth, Mrs D Unsworth, Mrs P Ward, Mrs S Walshe, Mrs N Gravett, Mrs H P Hardman & Mr M Hardman.
