Town centres may get sniffer dogs

Police sniffer dogs were deployed in Reading, Berkshires last week in a bid to rid the town of drugs.

The dogs were stationed at the doors of several pubs and those entering were searched by the animals before being allowed inside. No arrests were made but cannabis was seized during the trial run. “If the dog made an indication that there was a scent of drugs, the person was searched by door staff” said a police spokesperson.

Small quantities of drugs, including some Class A substances were seized during the search. Officers say the dogs are due to be deployed again soon.
