Petplan veterinary awards launch first ever ‘people’s choice’ award

The Petplan Veterinary Awards, now in its seventh year, is for the first time inviting the general public to put forward nominations for ‘The People’s Choice Award’. The Awards are the ‘Oscars of the Veterinary World’ and will take place at the CBSO Hall, Birmingham on the 20th April.

Every year Petplan receives hundreds of nominations for the four coveted categories: Vet Nurse of the Year, Vet Receptionist of the Year, Vet Practice of the Year and Vet of the Year. The People’s Choice Award gives the public the opportunity to recognise a vet or veterinary practice, or another individual for making a real difference to the lives of pet owners, and their pets.

Caroline Reay from Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Merton, winner of the 2005 Vet Practice of the Year Award comments: ‘To be nominated for an industry Award for work that you enjoy is an honour as we really love, and are immensely proud of, what we do. The introduction of the People’s Choice Award is very exciting as the Awards have now opened up to everyone, giving people the chance to tell their own stories from a unique and personal point of view’.

The Blue Cross Animal Hospital was opened by HRH The Queen Mother back in 1999 and now has over 15,000 registered clients. The practice has been extremely busy in the last year, setting up weight clinics for overweight pets, re-homing animals, and caring for thousands of pets belonging to people who cannot afford private veterinary fees.

Fiona Pinkney, communications manager of Petplan added: ‘We are delighted that the Petplan Veterinary Awards have grown from strength to strength each year.  We are launching The People’s Choice Award as we receive so many heart-warming stories from owners, whose nominations are so different from those submitted by veterinary colleagues.  This Award gives people the opportunity to recognise the unsung achievements of someone in the veterinary world who has made a real difference in their lives’.

For every nomination received, Petplan donates £1 to the charity, Petsavers.  Please log onto to nominate.  The deadline for the People’s Choice Award entries is the 3rd March 2006.
