Well, it’s that time of year again: the wind chill factor -4, ice and snow on the ground – Display practice time!
Wrapped in their warm coats sporting hats, gloves and scarves the dedicated members of the Cheshire Dog Display Team put their faithful hounds, the real stars, through their paces practicing their feats of canine wizardry and learning new skills to thrill the crowds during the 2006 season.
2005 was extremely successful for the team, we performed at numerous events all over the country, events included the North Yorkshire County Show, the Cumberland County Show, Whitby Regatta, Grasmere Sports and the Dorchester Show to name but a few.
The Team at Dorchester Show were joined by Hugo the Llama and Buddy the miniature Shetland pony, who both proved to be crowd favourites. Hugo teamed up with a child from the crowd and had an exciting agility race against Biscuit the team’s Golden Retriever. There is no need to ask who won - HUGO of course!
2006 promises to be even busier and the team members diaries are already looking rather full with some of the countries largest and most prestigious shows including the Cheshire County Show, the Derbyshire County Show, the Devon County Show and the fabulous Kirkcudbright Tattoo where the team have been invited back to by popular demand following their superb display in 2004.
Sadly in 2005/06 we lost some of our retired team dogs, Holly, Tess, Seb and our own GSD Kai, all the dogs are sadly missed and fondly remembered for all the good work they did in promoting socially acceptable dogs and positive dog training.
On the brighter side the future is in safe hands in 2005 the team was joined by Lola, a Jack Russell, Jack, an Irish Wolfhound and Stumpy, a GSD and in 2006 we have no less than six new canine stars. Audiences in 2006 may be lucky enough to see one of the displays with our special new member Peggy the Kune Kune piglet who will be joining the team at selected events. Peggy loves to join in at team practices she will be accompanying the team at the Devon County Show.
We aim as a team not only to entertain but to also educate everyone who watches the displays.
Although we have a real mixture of doggie stars in terms of ages and breeds there is one thing they all have in common, they are all much loved pets. We hope that people watching will be able to identify with at least one of the dogs and go home inspired to train their family pet using the positive methods we promote.
At displays we have a static display area where the public can meet the dogs and handlers and gain further information on dog related issues such as training and behaviour. This always proves extremely popular particularly with children. Goodie bags are also distributed from this area provided by our sponsors and supporters who we are very grateful and proud to be associated with OURDOGS, CHUDLEYS & GREENIES.
As we practice during these cold pre season months it’s great to look back at all the super times we had during 2005 but it’s even more fun to look forward to a new and exciting season 2006!
