Girl drowns trying to save dog

A teenager has drowned trying to save her dog.

Michaela Connell, 16, jumped into the flooded River Ehen in Egremont, Cumbria and managed to grab hold of Max, her six-month-old terrier-Jack Russell cross, before they were both swept away.

Her father, who is himself a lifeguard, said: "She loved her dogs. She deserves a lasting memorial."

Her death was an accident, an inquest concluded on Monday.
