Dog's life saved by a banana sandwich

A dog belonging to a fishing enthusiast was treated by a vet with a diet of banana sandwiches in order to remove a fishing hook from the stomach. Candy, a Jack Russell owned by Elwyn Thomas was accompanying her owner on a fishing trip when she jumped into the river after the bait.

The plucky terrier dove after the line as Mr. Thomas cast off. Fortunately for Candy, she didn't bite off too much of the line and the vet was able to treat her without invasive surgery.

The vet, Mr Richard Gibson told reporters "Dogs swallow all sorts of things - two days before we had one that had swallowed a needle and thread," he said.

"In the majority of cases surgical intervention is not needed."
