Hopes fade for dog

Rescuers have called off an attempt to reach a deaf and blind dog which was trapped in a disused mine in Torfaen, Gwent.

Sprogget, an 18-year-old Jack Russell cross, fell down a crack in the hillside on last week, prompting a three-day rescue operation.

A CCTV camera and an excavator were used in the rescue attempt. At times, rescuers resorted to digging with their bare hands, hoping to reach the dog which had fallen into a fissure near the disused Six Bells colliery.
