Warning to dog owners

Dog owners in Merseyside are being urged to keep their pets under control when walking them close to the river or sea.

The appeal comes after two separate incidents last week when the inshore rescue service saved the lives of two dogs that had got into difficulties off the coast of New Brighton.

There was less than an hour between the two rescues when the dogs - one a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the other a cross-bred German Shepherd - were spotted by passers-by in the river Mersey, struggling to stay afloat against the strong tidal current.
