UK Poodle heads off to challenge

Donny - UK representative in Eukanuba World Challenge

Donny, the top winning Standard Poodle is off to the USA in December to represent the UK in the exciting Eukanuba World Challenge.

Following the launch of this exciting new competition at the European Show in Zagreb, many countries in Europe have been selecting a representative for this inaugural event, which bolts on to the existing Eukanuba Invitational in Long Beach, California.

The UK now has a worthy representative set to challenge the best in the world in the shape of Mike Gadsby’s and Jason Lynn’s Am Ch Afterglow the Big Tease, a four year old homebred Afterglow, a half brother to the top winning Contradiction, out of multi group winning Don’t Eat the Daisies. Donny is no stranger to winning in the States, being a multiple BIS winner there, including Best in Show at the prestigious Poodle Club of America Show in 2005 when he was enjoying a stint in the USA before travelling back to the UK at just over three years of age.

On his return to the UK, Donny won the Champion Stakes at his first attempt at SKC in May under Dutch all rounder Hans Van den Berg having previously taken top spot at WELKS under Jean Lanning. His second Best in Show came at SKC in August under Derek Smithmaking a great record for the number of times he has been shown. Two CC's with BOB, 2 BIS wins….Two BOB with no CC's, Group 2 and Group 4.

Not only has Donny gained Mike and Jason a great trip to the States in dark December, but they will have a chance of competing for big money prizes with the best in the world. OUR DOGS has featured the event in recent issues, and there will be more information about the show and fellow European competitors over the next few weeks.

The show represents a huge investment for sponsors Eukanuba, who this year alone have invited 40 countries to send a winning dog and two people, a package worth about $5000 in itself for the lucky winners.

Clearly in this first year not every dog would have been ready to meet all the criteria for qualification, or indeed overseas travel, but Donny fitted the bill in every respect. A seasoned traveller, fully qualified, already a winner on both sides of the pond….what a worthy representative for the UK.

So far Mike has handled Donny to one BIS win, and Jason the other, so the big question now is, who will handle the dog in California?

Watch this space as OUR DOGS tracks the competition over the next few weeks in the build up to the AKC/ EUKANUBA Finals in December.
