Obituary - Ellen Dobson
The canine world is the poorer with the passing of Mrs Ellen Dobson, one of the great characters of the dog show scene who will be so hard to replace.
I first met Ellen in the early 1950s when we were both new to showing, she with her English Springers and my Golden Retrievers we travelled on public transport for a number of years until I bought my first car and Ellen became my travelling companion to shows for many years. We served on numerous local Canine Society committees together and she had so much to give and was always there with help and advice.
She was a lovely lady, so very much a family person and loved her dogs, her showing and her judging right to the end. She was never happier than when standing in the show ring. I always remember her joy when she won in the Gamekeeper’s Classes at Crufts with her husband’s Golden Retriever. She was ‘over the moon’. Being approved to judge the Gundog Group and many of the Gundog Breeds, it was one of her regrets that she did not achieve CCs in Goldens and Labradors, her son’s favourite breed.
Amongst her many talents she was a fabulous cook. We shall all miss her shepherd’s pie for lunch at the shows and I recently enjoyed the gift of a jar of home-made plum jam. She loved her garden and her flowers and enjoyed making the floral arrangements for many societies.
Our thoughts are with her family, particularly Margaret, Richard and Dawn at this sad time and I extend the sympathy of the ‘doggy world’ in the loss of a lovely lady who was ‘MOTHER’ to all.
It is with great sadness I have to report the passing of Mrs Ellen Dobson (Teesview). Although troubled with chest ailments in the past few years Ellen died peacefully in her sleep on January 9th 2008. Ellen awarded 25 sets of ESS tickets (three of these were sex specific) starting with her first set in 1965 at Bournemouth and her last set poignantly at the club where she was President, The Northern English Springer Spaniel Society; Ellen was also one of the founder members of this Society in 1974. Also in that year Ellen awarded CCs at Crufts where she awarded her BOB to Sh.Ch.Hawkhill Connaught.
Ellen bred 11 champions over the years and many others being awarded tickets and reserve tickets. One of the most famous must be Sh.Ch Teesview Pandora of Truelindale followed by Sh.Ch.Teesview Tumeric and Ch.Teesview Tarmac to name just a few. Over the years Ellen helped with ESS rescue and re-homed many a dog. Her passing is almost the end of an era.
