Obituary - Hilda Jennings (Vorton Poodles)
All in the poodle fraternity will be saddened by the news of the death of Hilda Jennings on Christmas Eve, following a stroke.
Since her arrival in Darwen from Blackpool she had been a constant source of knowledge about the breed and many of today’s exhibitors including myself have much to be grateful for the time and expertise that she gave to us.
She served as a committee member of north Western Poodle Club for many years and was still President on her death. As a founder member of Northern Toy Poodle Club she was thrilled with the “tinies” even though she always had miniatures herself. Along with husband Milton they served on the committee and worked tirelessly as show managers for many years. In 1986 Hilda became Treasurer of NTPC a position she relinquished in 1997 but she remained a committee member.
Hilda was a very clever breeder producing several champions for herself and others both in the UK and overseas. She was intent in improving the quality of the breed and her “type” is still evident in many of today’s current winners. She was very generous with her time and enthusiasm for poodles. This was especially noticeable when she was judging. It is as a judge that she was held in high esteem both in the UK and abroad.
Although she had not attended many shows in recent years she was always interested to hear what was going on. We at Northern Toy and North Western have lost not only a friend but also a source of great wisdom and on behalf of everyone who has known her we say thank you. To her son Trevor and family we send our sincere condolences.
The funeral was on Friday 4th January. Donations can be made to Christie Cancer Hospital Manchester.

Back in the 1960s, Hilda and her husband Milton were starting a line of Miniature Poodles that were to be very influential in many different dogs. The first champion was in 1968 which was Ch Vorton Tranchant Christabelle. Then there was the CC winner Vorton Mona Lisa who in turn produced the first champion for Joan Porter (Hargreaves, as she was then) Ch Vorton Slick Chick of Jolanta who went on to produce the Crufts group winner Ch Jolanta By Jove. There was also Angelique of Vorton, Ch Vorton Fabrique, Ch Vorton Chantal plus Trudy Edge's Ch Foreman of Tranchant who was the grandsire of Ch Suraliam Rupert.
Milton and Hilda also bred V Sweet Charity who produced Ch Orlaine Fonteyn for owner Viv Whitham and her litter sister Orlaine Smarty Pants of Renwin who was the dam of Ch Renwin Riccadonna. Smarty Pants is in the pedigree of Ch & Ir Ch Renwin Rappelle & the CC record holder Ch Minarets Secret Assignment. Also bred at Vorton was V Perdita owned by Olive Morton and Viv Akers and she was the dam of Ch Mista Mutiny of Knotrom. Angela Corish bought V Ariadne and her daughter was Ch Sealaw Snapshot. Sue Holland's Vorton I'm Stunning's son Ch Suecliff Knight Errant at Kertellas was the sire of the former CC record holder Ch Navarre's Executive (another Crufts Group winner) Joan Porter had another champion from Hilda and Milton in the shape of Ch Vorton Limelight of Jolanta (a POTY finalist)
Hilda's also campaigned V Eyecatcher, V Girl Talk and V Lancashire Lass who all won CCs and Res CCs.
She had a wicked sense of humour and was ofter heard giggling at the side of the ring. After Milton died, it was her dogs that kept Hilda going. She still travelled to the distance shows and enjoyed showing her charges. As a judge she was very fair and knew what she liked. Sadly she was never asked to judge at Crufts.
To her sons and all her family we send our sincere sympathies.
