Obituary - Mrs Sybil Coward (Brackengold)
It is with deep regret that i report the death of Sybil Coward of the Brackengold Golden Retrievers on March 2nd Born in 1919, she had recently celebrated her 88th birthday.
Originally from Hayling Island, and serving in the RAF at the Ibsley Air Base during the Second world war, she was in charge of supplies and in particular fuelling the aircraft. Fiona, her only child, always says ‘the large number of planes the never returned with pilots or crew, she knew personally left a sad mark throughout her life.’
Sybil appears in a book ‘So much sadness - so much fun, published in 2002 covering RAF Ibsley and was were she met and later married Rex. They lived near the ex-airfield the rest of their lives, showed their first Golden in 1949 with success locally attending Crufts in 1950, collecting a second at their first Championship show. Won CCs in Golden and American Cockers having supported Fiona in making her American Champions. She judged Crufts in 1988 alongside Rex and her dog ticket winner Ch Coombstock Disco Dancer went BOB, reserve in the group, beaten only by the BIS winner.
The funeral took place at Salisbury Crematorium on Thursday 13th March. There were no flowers by request, but donations may be made to the Meningitis Trust at Sybil’s request, as Fiona had survived the disease as a child.
