YKC crufts qualifiers at discover dogs
Members of the Young Kennel Club are invited to take part in competitions at Discover Dogs, which will take place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November 2008 at Earls Court in London. The Young Kennel Club (YKC) ring will be hosting Crufts qualifying competitions for Grooming, Handling, and Heelwork to Music.
The grooming competition simply requires the YKC member to present their dog as they would for the show ring. They will be given a maximum of two and half hours to groom their dog under the watchful eye of a judge, with marks awarded for a combination of good presentation and careful handling.
Open to all YKC members, the grooming competition will be split into three age groups; Under 12 years, 12 years and over; and Over 18 years. For the grooming competition, it doesn’t matter whether the dog is pedigree or crossbreed, long, short, rough or even incredibly curly coated!
The YKC handling classes at Discover Dogs are open to YKC members who have dogs on the Activity or the Companion Dog Registers only. Dogs on the Kennel Club Breed Register may be entered into specific YKC classes at Open and Championship Shows. The handling classes will be split into three age groups, six to 11, 12 to 16; and 17 to 24 years.
The third event open to YKC members is the Heelwork to Music competition, which will be included at Discover Dogs for the first time this year. The competition will be split into two age categories; Under 12 years, and 12 years and over (up to the member’s 18th birthday). The competition will also be divided into the two styles in which YKC members can perform with their dog, either Heelwork or Freestyle. Members who are lucky enough to qualify in these competitions will be eligible to compete at Crufts 2009.
The cost of entering a dog into the YKC competitions is £2 per class. The closing date for entries is 8th October 2008 and all entry forms can be found at www.discoverdogs.org.uk/young-kennel-club-competitions.
