European Spaniel Congress

The 20th European Spaniel Congress takes place from 29th May – 31st May in the Hotel Aurora, Terbon (Czech Republic), sharing the date with the European Spaniel Show (with CAC) and the Club Winner Show (with CAC) 2009

Founded nearly half a century ago in 1960, the European Spaniel Association (ESA) was joined by the United Spaniel Association of Great Britain in the ‘70s. During that time, a working committee from a cross section of European countries strove to adapt the breed standards and have them recognised by parent clubs and the Kennel Club within the UK.

With members stemming from France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and all over Europe, the ESA has been focussed on health issues in the breeds from the ‘80s onwards, aiming to halt the spread of inherited defects.

Taking place once every two years, the European Spaniel Congress was a vitally important event for the member countries as this was their delegates’ only form of communication.

This meant that if a club did not have a representative at this event, they risked loosing contact with the ESA and having their membership revoked.

Zdenek Antonovic (CZ) is the current ESA chairman and in the year of the association’s 20th congress, despite today’s technologies meaning that there is no lack of communication, he encourages active participation. He endeavours to keep the congress a key event in each club’s calendar, and 2009 is no exception. This year’s European Spaniel Congress takes place from 29th May – 31st May in the Hotel Aurora, T?ebo? (Czech Republic), sharing the date with the European Spaniel Show (with CAC) and the Club Winner Show (with CAC) 2009.

Three Day Event

The three-day event will begin on Friday with the congress and a medical lecture about HD examination for Spaniel Breeds, followed by a talk on the history of Cocker Spaniels in the Czech Republic. New members to the ESA, International English Springer Spaniel Symposium Committees (IESSC), will be introducing themselves as a precursor to the ESA Congress. Voting for the Congress’ 2011/2013 hosts will follow. During the afternoon the delegates could watch all subjects of a Czech FT in practice. Saturday 30th May and Sunday 31st May hold host to the European Spaniel Show and the Club Winner Show, respectively.

Attendees will see a cross section of UK jury members: Mrs Angela Hackett and Mrs Penny Lancaster (English Cocker Spaniel), Mrs Francis Jackson (English Springer Spaniel), Mr Bob Jackson (selected classes) and Mr John Thirwell (other Spaniels).

Included in the event are two evenings of entertainment. On the Friday, show and congress participants and will be treated to an open air barbeque and on the Saturday there will be a gala evening with music. OUR DOGS wishes all participants the very best of luck for what is set to be a very rewarding weekend for Spaniel clubs and their breeds and hopes to have further coverage in forthcoming issues.
