Obituary - Roy Metcalfe (Metadale)
OUR DOGS was so sorry to hear of the death of Roy Metcalfe (Metadale) last week.
Roy, along with his wife Barbara and daughter Suzanne enjoyed great success with their Longhaired Dachshunds for many years, a breed in which they made up many champions. They have also enjoyed much success in other Dachshund varieties, Afghans and Shih Tzus.
Roy was also well-known and respected as a championship show judge of no less than 25 breeds, he also often judged the hound and utility groups, and BIS. He judged Dachshunds and Tibetan Terriers at Leeds.
He judged the hound group at Crufts in 2001, with his winning Basenji going on to BIS.
EVERYONE IN dogs, and Dachshunds in particular, must have been as shocked and saddened as I was last Wednesday to be told that Roy had died suddenly the day before from, I believe, blood poisoning, writes Pamela Poulter.
It was only ten days earlier that he and daughter Susanne had judged on all three days at Leeds Championship Show. I spoke to Roy after he had judged Wires, he looked well and was cheerful saying, ‘that was Wires until Crufts in 2012’; I said I would probably have stopped showing by then to which he said, ‘but you’ll be there.’
Roy judged all Dachshunds and many other breeds in the hound group, as well as the group, only at Bath this year he added Wolfhounds to his list. Many dogs in the utility group were judged by him, as well as the group. I am not sure which hound breed the family started with - it may have been Afghans, but I believe they had champions in all varieties of Dachshunds apart from the Wires, but Roy was very taken with the Standards and enjoyed judging them, and they may well have owned a Mini Wire.
I cannot remember when I first met Roy, Barbara and Susanne but they were always so friendly and interested in one’s dogs and what you were doing. I had shown under Roy at both Open and Championship shows and always found him to be fair and willing to talk about your dogs and how he saw them. At Leeds he said of Ellie on the table, ‘what a character,’ as she kissed him and continually wagged her tail.
They were very much a family and certainly since Susanne’s marriage if she has been in Turkey it has been Roy who has shown the dogs, even before Roy and Susanne used to both show if neither were judging. They have just made up Metadale Make It Happen and at the Hound Show had the RCC & BPIB with a young lady at her second show. And at East of England the Mini Long also took a RCC & BPIB.
Roy and Barbara were shortly to celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary, preparations for which had already started.
We will all miss Roy very much and offer our sincere condolences to Barbara, Susanne and all their family.
The funeral will be held today (Friday, August 14) at 11.40am at the Waltonwrays Crematorium, Skipton, BD23 3BT. Family flowers only, please, with donations in lieu to British Heart Foundation and or/Ewings Sarcoma Bone Cancer Research.
