Shar Pei weekend planned

The Shar Pei, a breed which has been much maligned and has borne the brunt of much criticism – some deserved, much not. To its enthusiast, a very special and unique breed, to its adversaries, a breed apparently condemned.

The Shar Pei Club of GB is dedicated to the continued improvement of its charge and believes that, like many vets and judges alike, that great strides have been made over the years in both health issues and conformity. The Shar Pei of yesteryear was perhaps an exaggerated and unsound specimen, but from that grounding, the dedicated breeders have worked steadfastly to produce a breed which now holds it head high with pride, despite and because of, it’s adversaries. To that end, the committee of the Shar Pei Club of Great Britain decided to promote the breed to all and has organised a very special event – and “The Weekend of the Shar Pei” was formulated.

Next year sees the 10th Shar Pei of the Year competition – and that date had already been set, so it was an obvious choice to extend this function and make it into a spectacular event, so the Club has included a Health Seminar,. After much discussion, it was decided to invite eminent and experienced speakers from the United States to join no less eminent speakers from this country and devote the second day to issues which breeders are concerned about and give priority to.
Invitations were sent to Mr Lee Arnold, Vice President of the AKC Health Foundation and Chairman of the Shar Pei Charitable Trust, to Dr Linda Tintle DVM, world respected vet concerning health issues in the Shar Pei and to Dr Ruth Barbour from our own Kennel Club.

The committee told OUR DOGS that it feels privileged to have three such eminent speakers at the weekend and it is hoped that anyone with any degree of interest or commitment in this fascinating breed will join them.

On the Saturday you can take pleasure in watching the cream of our show stock, followed by dinner, and then enjoy the anecdotes of our after-dinner speaker – Mr Frank Kane.

If you require any more information on any aspect of the Weekend, call Joy Bradley on 01530 260422 or Tim Ball on 01827 712048 who will happily answer your questions. However, should you just want to book your ticket, then contact the Club Treasurer, Lin Shaw on 01293 511700 who will gladly send out a leaflet and booking form – available now. The tickets cost £25 for The Shar Pei of the Year Competition, which includes a super dinner and £25 for the Health Seminar. So, come on, support this fabulous and endearing breed, meet others with a common interest and make a weekend of it and join them for “The Weekend of the Shar Pei”

OUR DOGS will be covering this event in the run up, for further details contact Margaret Kempster on oolagha@btinternet.com
