ALMOST FROM the moment ‘Blue’ was born he stood out as being something very special. Even as a suckling whelp you could see the strength in his quarters as he pushed to get to the milk bar, but who could have imagined quite what the show world later held in store for him.

He was a precocious puppy, giving rise to a number of breeders being cautious of his maturity, suggesting that as an adult he would be ‘over the top’ yet he continued his puppy career with countless BPIS along the way.

However, it was to be his first Junior class at the GSP Club Championship, judged by the President of the GSP Club of France, Renet Gerlet, which was to set him off on the road to stardom. Monsieur Gerlet awarded him the Dog CC that day at the tender age of 12? months. His title soon followed some two months later under Mrs Pam Blay, with Best of Breed, going through to the Group under Mrs Peggy Grayson… it was to be a day that dreams are made of, not only did he show his socks off - he won as well!

Blue’s show awards are too many to list individually; however, amongst them are: 36 CCs (his first at 12-months, his last aged over 8-years-old at Crufts), five Group 1s including BIS at National Gundog 1998, plus Reserve BIS GBAS 1996, Reserve BIS LKA 1998, together with three times Dog CC at Crufts, twice with BOB, three times CC at the GSPC and GSPA Club Championship Shows, including a BIS.

Blue never was a ‘one trick pony’, having been a working gundog on his days off, so just to put the icing on the cake we entered him on a whim at 8-years-old for a Show Gundog Working Day, having done no polishing up whatsoever. Out of 12 dogs entered that day, just three dogs gained the necessary marks - Blue, his kennel mate Ch Barleyarch Pink Lady and a Spinone, the judges remarking on what a fine working dog he was… so proud were we that it was hard to keep our composure.

He has, over the years, produced some lovely dogs. Not all have hit the show ring but out of some that have competed, he has racked up five UK Show Champions, two Australian Champions a further five CC winners and three Reserve CC winners resulting in him being awarded Top Stud Dog 2002 and Top Sire 1997, 2000 and 2005.

It has been to our delight that many of the breeders who were first cautious about him have since judged him and added to his accolades. For those of whom just admired him as he strode around the ring in all his magnificence, thank you for your wonderful comments over the years, we will treasure them.

And lastly, to Blue himself, I will forever remember the excitement of striding around those big Group rings barely able to keep pace as you powered along. Our dearest dog, thank you for making dreams come true, you have always been, and will remain, the greatest of dogs.
