KC urges dog owners to fight back against further beach bans

KC Dog, the Kennel Club scheme in place to help dog owners protect their rights, is alerting all local dog-owning residents in Lyme Regis to the consultation period currently being run by the council regarding proposed dog control orders.

West Dorset District Council is looking into extending the Lyme Regis Dog Exclusion Order which was implemented in 2007. This would result in dogs being banned from Front Town Beach (bounded by a line from the Cobb slipway to the southernmost point of the north harbour wall eastwards to Cobb Gate car park) between 1 April and 31 October. The Council is also consulting on dogs being kept on leads on Front Town Beach for the remainder of the year from 1 November to 31 March, meaning dog restrictions would be in place all year round.

The formal consultation period runs until 16th January, and KC Dog recommends all dog owners visit the council’s website at http://www.dorsetforyou.com/index.jsp?articleid=390805 to see full details of the consultation and how the proposed orders will affect them. For residents without access to the internet, written responses to the consultation can be sent to Dog Control Order Consultation - Lyme Regis, Environmental Health, West Dorset District Council, 58-60 Stratton House, High West Street, Dorchester, DT1 1UZ.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “We would urge all dog owners in Lyme Regis to fight against these unnecessary proposals by responding to the consultation and encouraging others to do the same. Lyme Regis has gone far enough already in limiting access for dog walkers and it seems to us that it’s time for owners to take a stand. The consultation stage is the most effective time for responsible owners to make their voice heard and KC Dog can assist dog owners by providing advice on how to do this.’

‘KC Dog is an information network, free to join, whose members benefit from up-to-date news on dog control orders, and receive guidance from the Kennel Club. All dog owners are urged to join KC Dog, and be a part of this reciprocal network by acting as our eyes and ears.’
