Champion Stakes

To be asked to judge the last final of the Pedigree Champion Stakes 2008 was a great honour in its self, but to do it at Manchester Championship Show, where I am Chairman, put the icing on the cake.

As one would expect, quality in the dogs was in depth, which made judging them such a great pleasure, and I was really thrilled with my placings and my short list.

The winner was the Bulldog Ch. Iceglint I’m Harry The last time I judged this dog it was at a Club Show when he was 6months and 5 days old. I wrote highly of him then and made him Res. Best Puppy in Show behind the Best In Show winner who was also a puppy but 5 months older. To me, he epitomizes everything a bulldog should be, strong, well built, free from exaggerations, and boy can he move !. He took the ring by storm, and it was a pleasure to award him the top spot.
2, The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ch. Soletrader My Aphrodisiac, was another that was so sound and typical of the breed, and a delight to go over. I loved the head and expression and he has the most wonderful personality. So sound and well put together in body and quarters, he was another who stole the ring on the move.

3, the Hungarian Vizsla, Sh Ch./Aus.Ch. Hungargunn Bear It’n Mind. A 6 yrs. Old who never seems to look older, with qualities that cannot be denied, and looking so impressive both standing and moving. So much has been written about him and I concur wholeheartedly.

4, the Great Dane. Ch. Myhalston Mr.Malachi who, by coincidence, is the same age as the Vizsla, and showing that quality will always out, no matter what the age. Powerfully built, excellent carriage, and moving out well and true. Handled to perfection.

5, the Lhasa Apso, Ch. Jalus Galileo. One has to admire this dog’s type, size and style, and was put down to perfection. Sound and true in front, with a good balance in body and quarters, lovely head carriage and action.

I also short listed the Rough Collie, Ch. Brooklynson From Rio, the Griffon Bruxellois Ch. Donzeata Royal Vintage, and the Newfoundland Ch. Sheridel Nerissa of Alphabear, all wonderful dogs.
My thanks go to Pedigree for asking Manchester to host and organise the event, and to all exhibitors for the abundance of quality in their dogs, and their generosity in accepting my decisions which made the occasion so enjoyable. The finals were followed by an excellent reception for 200 which everyone I have spoken to said, had a wonderful atmosphere.
