Windsor 2009 proved to be a fertile ground for talent... no, not the dogs, but singers at the pre-show members’ supper party!
Always a well attended event, it is a great thing that Windsor has maintained this enjoyable evening get together on the night of its show. Many other societies seem to have dispensed with their pre-show dinners from Manchester with their Belle Vue event (mind you, you had to order your salad weeks in advance!), and Blackpool which used to have a very posh do at the Grand Hotel Blackpool where the Master of Ceremonies would announce each guest as they arrived. The tradition at Blackpool for their pre-show dinner used to go back to such names as Dennis Marples, Stanley Dangerfield, Stafford Somerfield, Harold and Peggy Roberts, all enjoying slap up meals resplendent in Kennel Club green DJ's. All gone now.
Leeds held a swanky affair with champagne in Harewood House before a stroll across the grass to the delightful marquee for dinner followed by a disco where someone would always embarrass themselves with a crazy dance routine!
All of this has been jettisoned to a past age, so it is good to see people enjoying themselves in a pleasant social atmosphere before the show. Special mention should go to Clem, the entertainer who sang so well, and for him encouraging Terry Nethercott to give us his traditional and powerful rendition of My Way, Jeff Luscott to give us a song from Grease and finally Dave Cavill who is turning into George Melly!
A night to remember... Simon Cowell, beware.
