Canine Freestyle GB
at Tomlinson’s Canine Centre, Markfield

CANINE FREESTYLE GB (in conjunction with North Derbyshire Dog Agility) usually holds its May show within All About Dogs - the fabulous show in the grounds of Brentwood Leisure Centre. However, late last year Roy Dyer, Main Organiser of All About Dogs, let us know that due to unforeseen circumstances the Essex Dog Training Club would not be staging this very popular event in 2009.

The Club was so disappointed, having held a competition in Brentwood since 2003 at this venue - and the KC Licence had already been applied for. After a swift committee meeting it was decided to find another venue and apply to the Kennel Club to transfer the existing licence. Canine Freestyle GB were so fortunate that Tomlinson’s Canine Centre, Markfield, Leicestershire where they normally hold their September show was available the entire weekend of 9th & 10th May.

Their application to the Kennel Club to transfer the licence to Tomlinson’s went through and was rapidly followed by phone calls, emails and letters to the judges who had already been invited and had accepted to judge in Essex! Everyone was so obliging, and the new arrangements were made. The committee arrived at Tomlinson’s early Saturday morning to set up for the two-day show. The ‘Training Hall’ at the Canine Centre had been well cleaned and all the Agility Equipment was safely stored out of the way. The venue isn’t the biggest so every square inch is utilised fully.

After just one hour, the hall was once again transformed into a theatre for the Heelwork To Music Competition. They received 209 entries for the weekend - including the first of the YKC Crufts Qualifying Competitions. Officials and competitors gathered at one end of the hall and spectators at the other. This time the sun was shining and the scene was set for a fabulous weekend of new routines and entertainment and of course all this in the friendly and competitive spirit which is forever growing in this sport.

The hall was bedecked with banners and a beautiful rich red backing cloth gave the hall a professional finish to the photographs - all taken by Mr Allan Brown (for copies please email karen.sykes@ talktalk.net). A small marquee was erected for competitors to be shaded before entering the competition area and with a brisk breeze blowing the hall was well ventilated in the spring sunshine. The committee also sourced a sturdy, portable ramp to ease access to all areas for those who may have needed it.

The members of the Canine Freestyle GB committee would once again like to thank all competitors, spectators, helpers and supporters for their help over the two weekends. Please note the next competition held by Canine Freestyle GB (in conjunction with North Derbyshire Dog Agility Club) will be on 4th & 5th July 2009 at Newark & Notts Showground within the fabulous new show ‘Dogs Unleashed’.
