Towards the end of 2008, the Kennel Club wrote to all breed clubs and asked each club to nominate a health coordinator or representative. They further asked for a single health representative to then be nominated for each breed.
Some breeds have had difficulties achieving this and the KC has issued the following guidance in an attempt to help all breeds who have not yet nominated a representative for the KC to liaise with on health matters:
- Each breed should nominate one health coordinator /representative. If there are several clubs in a breed and agreement on a single health representative cannot be reached, then those clubs should consider forming a health group or committee and that health group should nominate a ‘leader’ for a given period, who can act as the breed health representative for the KC.
- It is very important that every single lead health representative must have email (or access to email). If you are a breed health coordinator and the KC does not have a current contact email address for you, then please let them have one as soon as possible. Please remember to keep them updated on any changes.
- There is no formal ‘job description’ for health representatives. The single most important quality that a health coordinator should have is an interest in the health of the breed. Some time to spare and discretion are also, of course, essential. Coordinators do not necessarily need to be a member of a breed club, although this is more usual. No formal qualifications are needed, but many breeds have chosen health coordinators that do have some sort of health related qualification.
The Kennel Club will shortly begin formal communications with breed health representatives, via a specially created email group.
Listed below are the breeds where a health representative has been agreed and then also those breeds where the KC is not aware of an agreed rep. If your breed does not yet have an agreed representative, then please try to achieve this as soon as possible via your breed club. All queries, and updated information, regarding breed health coordinators should be directed to Mrs Diana Brooks-Ward, Kennel Club Health Coordinator at Diana.email@example.com
