There’s a new kid on the block in Akitas, in the shape of Ch Ruthdales Rampage, who was made up recently at 13 and a half months old.
Rampage (sired by Muti Ch & Crufts Best of Breed Winner Ruthdales Eye of the Tiger out of Ch Ruthdales Gatecrasher) has remained undefeated in all classes en-route to his Championship title, says breeder Matthew Bostock: ‘We were really excited about this breeding from the start and once Rampage reached four-weeks we just loved his breed type and excellent conformation, little did we know that he would be the ninth Ruthdales UK Champion. Rampage won on his show debut and at his second show won the CC from the minor puppy class under Mrs Carol Harwood, and then won Best Puppy in Show under highly respected top all-rounder Derek Smith.’
Rampage was seen on Matthews’s website and the Ruthdales’ team were approached by Janet and Natalia Kovriguina from Akita Villa Akitas in Russia. They had explained that Rampage was ‘just the male that they had been waiting for!’
Matthew continues: ‘I explained that I wanted to keep this male, but I was very impressed about the commitment of my new Russian friends when they flew over to visit and talk more about my dogs. After weeks of talks an agreement was reached for Natalia and Oleg to become co-owners of Rampage. As Rampage started to grow we realised his great potential and we felt that we would like the best handler that we could find to pilot Rampage to the top.’
Matthew approached another top breeder and handler, Liz Dunhill, who has bred Champions in five breeds and has also bred Champion Akitas herself. Matthew spoke to Liz regarding the handling of Rampage, Liz said that it would have to be something special to get her to come back to show Akitas, and with this she came over to see for herself! Once liz looked at Rampage she jumped at the opportunity to handle him and the rest, as they say, is history.
