New Dna Testing Schemes
Following communication with the relevant breed clubs, the Kennel Club has decided to establish new official DNA testing schemes as listed below. It is expected that more breeds and DNA disease tests will be added in due course.
Australian Shepherd, CEA/CH and prcd-PRA Optigen, HC, AHT; Bulldog Urate Stone Disease, AHT; French Bulldog HC, AHT; German Wirehaired Pointer, von Willebrands Disease, Laboklin; Labrador Retriever, Centronuclear Myopathy, AHT / Laboklin; Newfoundland, Cystinuria, Optigen / Laboklin; Portuguese Water Dog, prcd-PRA, Optigen; Russian Black Terrier, Urate Stone Disease, AHT.
The Animal Health Trust has advised that HC seen in Australian Shepherds and French Bulldogs is actually the same gene as is found in Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Boston Terriers. Therefore so as to adopt consistency and for a more formal naming approach for all these breeds, the Kennel Club will record the DNA results for HC as HC-HSF – the letters JHC (for Boston Terriers) and HC-1 (for Staffordshire Bull Terriers) will no longer be used.
Copies of all future test certificates issued by the testing laboratories will be sent directly to the Kennel Club, where the test result will be added to the dog’s details on the registration database. This will trigger the publication of the test result in the next available Breed Records Supplement, and the result will also appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog, and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog.
Owners who have already had their dog(s) DNA tested for these conditions can send copies of the test certificate into the Kennel Club and the data will be added to the dog’s registration details. In addition, if the owner includes the original registration certificate for the dog (not a copy) then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA result on it, free of charge. Please send the DNA test certificates to:
Health & Breeder Services Department, The Kennel Club, 1 – 5 Clarges Street, Piccadilly, London, W1J 8AB.
