Ken Sinclair is famous in the world of dogs for his Araki Tibetan Terriers, but some may not know that he is also famous in the horse world for his stud of spotted Miniature Horses and spotted Austrian draught horses, writes Mel Vincent.
Ken has had the honour of judging both at Crufts and Horse of The Year show, the equine equivalent of Crufts: which not many folk could lay claim to.
On Tuesday morning one of Ken’s near neighbours rang to say that one of their Kune Kune pigs had escaped and could Ken keep a look out for him? The neighbour then set out to search for the errant swine and noticed that one of Ken’s draught horses, Araki Big Bertha had got ‘cast’ (i.e. stuck fast) on her side in a ditch in her field. He alerted Ken who ran out towards the stricken horse only to be pole-axed by the pig who shot out of one of Ken’s outbuildings (you couldn’t make it up!).
Now sporting a sprained ankle Ken reached Bertha but was unable to extricate her so summoned the local fire brigade who arrived promptly and - assisted by a local farmer and his tractor - were able to rescue Bertha. Bertha and her unborn foal were subsequently given the all clear by Ken’s vet. The pig was also rounded up and put into a spare loose box to await collection by his owner. As all this happened before 10 am Ken said he would have liked to have taken an afternoon nap but as it was he had a bitch due to whelp!
