IT IS with sadness I have to report the passing of Mrs
Nellie Ennals of the Bringtonhill Great Danes. She is one
of the last links the breed had with the post war era. As
a young teenager I well remember meeting Nellie at the
first post war show for the breed after the war organised
by the Great Dane Breeders Association. Nellie, often
reminded me over the years how I was overheard to say ‘how young Mrs Ennals looks’!! Where have all those
years gone??
Nellie bred several of the immediate post-war Champions, but one of
the very early Champions that stands out is the red fawn dog Ch Basra Of
Bringtonhill. She had a unique claim to fame in that she was able to bring
back the BLUE colour, which had been lost over the war years in the UK
and in one of my meetings with the Beryl Lee Booker (mother of the late
Dibbie Somerfield of Panfield Boxer fame) she asked me to recommend to
the Great Dane Club that Nellie should have the honour of receiving the
Lee Booker Trophy which is awarded to those who do something considered
of merit in the breed and is held for two years.
Nellie who just failed to make the Century, had until very recently
attended Great Dane Shows held in the Midlands, and although failing eye
sight made things difficult for her, she loved to be amongst Dane people
and their dogs.
A regular exhibitor over 60 years there are many Daneites who will have
happy memories of Nellie.
