Obituary - Frank Gater 1916-2010

Frank GaterIt is with great sadness that I have to announce the death on the 28 December at the grand age of 94 years of Frank Gater, writes Dorothy Cullum.

A good friend and stalwart supporter of the German Shepherd Dog, he joining the group in 1956 where he was an active member, later to hold a position as Chairman and President from 1970 until 2002 when he became President until the present day.

Mr Frank Gater. A member of the Kennel Club, was always working to achieve a good sound working relationship with them and the WUSV in Germany.

I first knew Frank when he was an active member of Edmonton BAGSD training and working obedience. He represented many times BAGSDS and the GSD world even in recent years at WUSV meetings. in Germany. His company on two occasions I was happy to have when I attended meetings on behalf of the League.

A special person who always was willing to talk and listen, a virtue that some are lacking. His cheeky grin and sense of humour, along with his company were always a pleasure to have.
A man holding some very strong views on what was correct for his members as well as the breed. Always wishing to go forward and keep up with the times. We had many a discussion about the breed and where it was heading.

Frank was involved in holding a position with the local council, as well as owning with his wife Doreen Spire Ridge kennels.

Attended as many shows as he could run by BAGSDS he would mingle around and have a cheery word for everyone. He was always to be seen along with other stalwarts at Crufts, being a regular visitor to the GSD Discover Dogs stand, where he would pass some time talking to owners old and new about the breed he loved.

A person whose loss will be felt and who will leave a big hole in the German Shepherd Dog breed as well as BAGSD, he was a wise person.

Our thoughts are with Doreen and the family at this time, who has requested that there are no flowers but donations go the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance via the Sec. Mrs Doreen Little Copper Beech, 81 Park View Road, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands B74 4PS
