As a Medical Herbalist, Hilary Self is very often asked, “is there is anything that can be given to dogs to make them more relaxed, confident, and self assured in the show ring?”.
Problems such as pulling back, or resistance to being handled by the judge are very common, and can apply to all sizes of dogs. It would appear however that the smaller dog breeds are more likely to become anxious and stressed in this situation. In these instances there are a number of natural healthcare products that can help including herbs, homeopathy, and Bach flower essences.
Herbs such as Valerian, Chamomile, Vervain, and Skullcap, will have a beneficial multi-faceted action on the body without ‘doping’ the dog, as conventional sedatives and tranquillisers do. These herbs will help strengthen the nervous system allowing the dog to focus on its handler, rather than being affected by what is going on around it. Herbs can be used either in dried or liquid format and can be added to the dog’s daily food.
Bach Flower Essences are very appropriate in these situations, being aimed at ‘states of mind’ rather than physical conditions, but it is important that the owner tries to view the problem from the dog’s perspective when choosing the most appropriate remedy. A Bach Flower essence Emergency Spray, which is ready diluted, is now available and is ideal for use as an all-purpose ‘comforter’. This can be sprayed directly into the dog’s mouth and may also be misted over the dog. Remember that handlers can often benefit from using these flower essences themselves as they can easily transmit anxiety and show nerves to their dogs.
Hopefully by using herbs, flower essences, or homeopathy, you will be able to help ensure that your time in the show ring is a much happier and more rewarding experience for both you and your dog.
