Rise in overseas entries again

Almost 22,000 qualified dogs will be heading for the NEC in Birmingham from 9th-12th March to compete at Crufts 2017.They will make a total of 24,311 class entries. Last year was of course the 125th anniversary of the founding of the show, this year cannot claim any such special anniversary.
The Kennel Club has announced that 21,838 qualified individual dogs will this year be taking part in the Breed Judging, Gamekeepers' Classes and the Obedience and Agility Championships at Crufts.  That is some 81 dogs less than last year's figure of 21,919, a reduction of less than half a per cent.
This means that Crufts has not quite managed to follow the upward trend set by the increases in entries experienced so far this year at the first two championship shows of 2017 - Boston and Manchester. However it has to be remembered that last year's Crufts entry at the 125th Anniversary Show was itself up over 2% over the previous year. It was the highest entry experienced by the show since 2010.
As ever, the event has a truly international flavour with 3,469 dogs from overseas this year competing at Crufts, compared to 3,396 in 2016.  That is an increase of 2.1%.
Dogs from 55 overseas countries will take part in the show, including, as the top overseas country entry - France with 418 dogs, followed closely by Italy (373), the Netherlands (327) and the Republic of Ireland (305).
The top ten overseas entries will come from:

France 418
Italy 373
The Netherlands 327
Republic of Ireland 305
Germany 280
Sweden 250
Russian Federation 235
Belgium 219
Czech Republic 123
Poland 120
Overseas entries now account for nearly 16 per cent of the overall show entry. The number of breeds competing at Crufts continues to grow, adding to the diversity of the event. Two new breeds have been added this year, the Jack Russell with a staggering 97 dogs entered and the Great Swiss Mountain Dog with 40.

Labradors

Top breed entry again this year is the Labrador Retriever at 555 just ahead of Golden Retrievers with 542. Last year too Labrador Retrievers had the biggest entry with 588 dogs for the two judges, followed by Golden Retrievers with 569.

Gerald King, Crufts Chairman, said: 'We are delighted that entries to Crufts remain strong and steady. We feel honoured to welcome dogs from such a wide variety of breeds, representing all corners of the globe. The fact that people travel far and wide to enter this prestigious event is testament to the place it continues to hold in people's hearts and we intend to keep going from strength to strength.
'With Crufts also hosting the tenth anniversary of the Eukanuba World Challenge this year, it is a fantastic opportunity to have the entire dog world in one place celebrating the most successful and well-known dog show in the world. This will throw the spotlight on the magnificence of pedigree dogs and enhance the partnership the Kennel Club has with Eukanuba, supported by the FCI.
'We thank everybody who has entered the show and look forward to welcoming all the dogs and their owners who make Crufts such a wonderful event, whether it is those who have been loyally returning year after year or those who are experiencing the show for the first time.'
