Winner of the 2010 Eukanuba World Challenge held in Long Beach last weekend was the Dobermann from Argentina Laruccia, Souto and Colombo’s Ch Alex de Akido San pictured here with, left to right, Mr Ron Menacker chairman of the AKC, finals judge Mrs Carla Molinari of Portugal, Herr Hans Muller President of the FCI, Mr Dennis Sprung CEO of the AKC and Mr Richard Learwood Global Marketing Director of Eukanuba presents the trophy.

The spectacle, held in the arena of the Long Beach Convention Centre, was the culmination of the competition which attracted 43 competitors from all over the world. Eukanuba's generous sponsorship and support had, for the four successive year, provided an international platform for successful breeders to compete at the highest level in conjunction with the AKC's own National Championship now in its tenth year.

The finals judge this year was Mrs Carla Molinari President of the Portuguese Kennel Club who headed up the panel of four other judges who each sent forward three dogs from their respective sections.

From section one, judged by Jaime Ganoza of Peru was the the Dobermann Ch Alex de Akido San from Argentina, the Greyhound Int/Nor/Swed/Dan Ch Showline Sporting Step from Norway and the Newfoundland Ch/Ir Ch Fairweather's Knockout With Brooklynbear (imp) from the UK.

Section two saw US judge Desmond Murphy in the centre of the ring and he sent forward the Chilean Afghan Ch Zurah Bint Rashid von Haussman, the Japanese Borzoi Ch Sunburst Huntsman at Mechta and the Russian Pembroke Welsh Corgi Multi Ch Andvol Pinkerton.

Judging section three was Ireland's own Sean Delmar who from the pre-judging thought highly of the Pug Ch Woodstock Stauss Orchestra from the Philippines, the Toy Poodle SG/Jap Ch Smash JP Vocalist from Japan and the Swedish Standard Poodle Ch Huffish Intensive Care.

Successful

Last but not least on the blue carpeted ring dedicated to the prejudging was section four which was judged by Stefan Stefik of Slovakia. Here the successful three were the Canadian Bernese Mountain Dog Am/Can Grd Ch Avatars Try Try Again CGN, the German Samoyed Multi Ch Sammantic Only Dog and the American Doberman Pinscher Ch Foxfires Love Monster which had won through to compete Lat the show as part of the new Breeders' Stakes competition in the USA giving the host country a dog in sections one and four.

Eukanuba World ChallengeThe competition format has now been perfected by the Eukanuba team which has worked hard and in concert with the AKC show officials. The prejudLging was completed in the main halls of the huge venue and then the 'cut' was taken forward to the arena as part of the main ring evening event.

This was preceded by the parade when all the competitors entered the ring with their national flags before the section judges, one by one, moved them again and announced their final three.
The final was then integrated into the arena evening performance on the Sunday As usual the whole was recorded for television and this will be broadcast in America on ABC Network on January 23rd 2011.

Speaking the press at a meeting the four section judges commented on the quality of the dogs in rings before them. Each spoke of the difficulties of making their final decisions and said that in many cases that 'star quality' has a part to play in the process of finding their final three.

It was testimony to the care and temperament of the dogs that some also competed at one or more of the three shows held at the same venue in the three days prior to AKC show.

In many cases they took principal awards or best of breeds to compete in group rings as well.
After four years in Long Beach the AKC National Championship and the Eukanuba World Challenge moves next year to Orlando, Florida for a five year stint where it will continue to capture the imagination of breeders and exhibitors across the whole of America and, with Eukanuba's continued support and sponsorship of its unique event, the whole of the world!
