BIS AT the tenth AKC/Eukanuba National Championship held in Long Beach earlier this month was the Australian Shepherd Dog Ch Propwash Reckon owned by Leslie Frank and Judy Harrington and handled by Judy Harrington. The winners took home a cheque for $50,000.
And if Judy Harrington looks a little familiar, she is, as she judged several breeds at the Midland Counties show last October.
As is usual the show was the culmination of the Dog Hair 'n' Eggnog Classic 'cluster shows' held at the Convention Center the shows of which averaged entries of around 2300 each day. This year the AKC show attracted an entry of 3400 from 167 different breeds which competed for $225,000 of prize money.
Prestigeous
As if by magic all the Christmas decorations and trees which adorned the aisles and rings disappeared on the Friday evening and the 12 rings were rearranged to cope with the two day AKC National Championship, the Obedience and Agility areas complete with REAL turf and the popular Meet The Breeds stands - the American equal of our own Discover Dogs section of Crufts.
Over from the UK judging at the show were Kennel Club chairman Mr Ronnie Irving, Mr Jeff Luscott, Mrs Karina Le Mare who was judging the prestigious Bred by Exhibitor Working group, Mr Glynn Payne and Mr Andrew Brace who had also judged a selection of breeds at the cluster shows.
The show judging commenced bright and early at 8am each day with break later in the day until the groups took place in the main arena of the Convention Center at 7pm.
Paying tribute to the organisers and Long Beach AKC chairman Mr Ron Menacker thanked them all for making them welcome over the last five years hoping that one day they would return. A bit like Arnie!
From next year the show along with the Eukanuba World Challenge moves to Orlando, Florida for a five year stint.
