The largest show of the year in Germany took place last weekend at the exhibition complex in Dortmund where a Saluki swept to Best in Show and a British Dogue de Bordeaux took third spot. This Horse and Dog extravaganza, now in its second year, attracts many thousands of visitors and this year was no exception with huge visitor numbers of 75,000; even on Sunday afternoon at 3pm, there were still queues at the main ticket desk. The entry for the show totalled over 9000 on the two days, whilst nearly 300 horses were also on show in a separate part of the Westfallenhallen complex.
The Kennel Club stand returned to the show after a gap of one year, and Sue Sampson was kept very busy answering questions about Crufts The OUR DOGS stand was not in attendance this year, but we are still delighted to bring you the main results and photographs from the event where a feature at the dinner on Saturday was the presentation of medals from the German Kennel Club, the VDH. One of the recipients for services to the world of dogs, and especially German breeds, was Zena Thorn Andrews, seen here in our photo receiving her award from the VDH President Mr Christofer Habig.

Bursting with activity and events, with competitions ranging from the Companion Dog of the Year to the final of Scruffts to find the family crossbreed dog of the year.
There is also the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Semi Final, which will put on show potential Crufts champions of the future. There will be dog agility and many different doggy demonstrations, not to mention a display of the winners of the Dog Photographer of the Year photographic competition. With over 100 trade stands selling all you can possibly imagine for you and your dog, it also provides the perfect opportunity for a bit of early Christmas shopping and makes Discover Dogs as a great family day out.
Caroline continued; “Discover Dogs is a truly unique event, demonstrating the wonderful world of dogs and why dogs deserve the title of our ‘best friend’. For all the companionship and benefits dogs give us, the Kennel Club presents Discover Dogs to highlight dogs. Helping to educate people about the important issues of owning a dog ensuring dogs are given the best promotion in life as well as providing a fantastic day out for the whole family!”

THE KENNEL CLUB MEETS WITH
BLOODHOUND BREED CLUBS

The Kennel Club Secretary, Caroline Kisko, and the KC Canine Geneticist, Dr Jeff Sampson met with representatives of the Association of Bloodhound Breeders and the Bloodhound Club in July to discuss the continued progress towards the protection and improvement of the breed.
The meeting addressed serious concerns over the various threats which exist, and which must be addressed by the Bloodhound breed (and others) and the potential consequences of not taking positive and urgent action.
Several suggestions were put forward, which both sides found to be satisfactory. The Association of Bloodhound Breeders and the Bloodhound Club will now discuss the proposals fully at a joint meeting in November and the Kennel Club awaits the two clubs’ formal response accordingly.
The Kennel Club looks forward to working with the Bloodhound breed to do everything possible to move away from the position of vulnerability and the threat to the breed generally.
