On Sunday 2nd December the inaugural Eukanuba World Challenge was hosted at the AKC/ Eukanuba National Championship show in Long Beach, California, USA. The FCI and the AKC in partnership with Eukanuba worked with kennel clubs from around the world to create this innovative event.

This World Challenge competition showcased top dogs from 40 countries who competed for the coveted title of the 2007 Eukanuba World Challenge Winner.  $10,000 prize money was awarded to the overall winner, $3,000 to the runner up, $2,000 to the first runner up and an additional
$5,000 to the respective Kennel Club.

Eukanuba is proud to announce the World Challenge Winner,
from the European section, judged by Mr Hiroshi Kamisato from Japan,
was the American Cocker Spaniel
Multi Champion Very Vigie Vamos A La Playa” (Vamos).

This stunning three year old male from Switzerland, bred and owned by Laurent Pichard was successfully handled to his win by Hughes Schuh.  Vamos and Hughes defeated 39 of the world’s top winning dogs to scoop up the title Euknauba World Challenge Winner and the respective prize money.  Highly renowned judge and FCI Vice president Mr Karl Reisinger had the prestigious task of selecting the ultimate winners.

There were a number of National Kennel Club Presidents and representatives were present at the event. They unanimously agreed that the competition was superb, the venue, the organization and the hospitality was exceptional. The Eukanuba World Challenge attracted a large and appreciative audience who spectated from a packed ringside.

Plans for developing the event are already being discussed for next year where it looks set to be even more spectacular.

The Junior Handlers Association of Ireland final, sponsored by Masterfoods, was held at the National Show Centre in Dublin on 2nd December, where the 17 finalists were put through their paces by judge Melanie Harwood of the famous Minaret's Poodles, herself a former Junior Handler.

Melanie chose Kelly Lawless, handling an Australian Silky Terrier, as the Junior Handler of the Year for 2007 who was cheered on by her proud parents Paul and Jean. This was Kelly's second year to take the title, having won last year under Gwen Huikeshoven from the Netherlands. Kelly has also been having great success in the breed ring this year with the family's Australian Silky Terriers and Belgian Shepherds having just returned from the Amsterdam Winner Show the previous weekend where she handled their Silky male to Best of Breed and Group 3 and Groenendael female to Best of Breed.

She will now represent Ireland at the
International Junior Handling Final at Crufts next March.
