Is two-tier registration the answer?

German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) enthusiast David Payne is calling for a two-tier registration system, which he believes would ensure that breeders of pedigree dog puppies (not just in GSDs) would have a quality standard that was relevant and enforceable.

He is also suggesting that the German Shepherd fraternity would be willing to be the ‘guinea pigs’ for such a pilot scheme. The Accredited Breeder Scheme (ABS) has already established the principal of two classes of registration but what is now required, he says, is the addition of a Breed Health Certificate (BHC) scheme which breeders would have to agree to take part in if they were to be accredited. At present, members of the ABS can gain an ‘accolade’ by agreeing to have their breeding stock tested, but this is of no more value than being a member of a breed club, breeding five litters or having dogs eligible for the stud book.

Dog Photographer of the year

The Kennel Club has announced the winners of its fourth annual Dog Photographer of the Year competition.

The competition, sponsored by Snappy Snaps, was open to any dog enthusiast - professional photographer and amateur alike - with a camera and
a genuine love of dogs.

The Kennel Club is proud to announce that the 2008 winners for each of the categories are

Tina Otto’s image has been announced as the overall winning image and will be reproduced on the front cover of the December edition of the Kennel Club's flagship publication, the Kennel Gazette.

Following a very succesful World Dog Show in the summer, the road show moves on from Stockholm to the East of Europe, where the cream of pedigree dogs will be shown at the forthcoming
European Show in Budapest.

OUR DOGS have now seen the plans for the showground and there will be over 100 rings to accommodate the large entry over the three days and further details are available by clicking through to the show website via the link above.
