Crufts figures defy expectations

Crufts Logo

Following hot on the heels of the news of an increase in the number of pedigree puppies registered in 2008, the Kennel Club has announced that the official entry figure for this year’s Crufts confirms the ongoing overwhelming popularity of dogs.

Around 28,000 dogs are expected to attend Crufts 2009, with a total of 22,677 dogs entered into breed judging and the Agility and Obedience Championships. This represents one of the highest entry figures yet.

Following on from last year’s overseas entry, which topped the 1,000 mark for the first time, and this year’s show is set to follow suit.

Caroline Kisko told us: ‘We are absolutely delighted that the Crufts entry figure once again proves that the unique bond between humans and dogs is both remarkable and unbreakable. We look forward to welcoming the many thousands of competitors and visitors alike to the show, and hope that they all take away a great experience of finding out everything that is great about the company of happy and healthy dogs.’

New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania is the World’s Most Pup-ular Hotel for Westminster Dog Show VIP’s (Very Important Pooches)

As the Host Hotel for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania, The World’s Most Popular Hotel®, is pleased to welcome all canine hopefuls participating in this annual event. The 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show takes place on February 9th and 10th 2009 at Madison Square Garden, right across from New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania.

The Hotel is known for hosting Westminster champions, including 2008 Best in Show winner Uno the Beagle. In an effort to increase their luck, guests have been calling for ‘Uno’s Room’ (#213A) as well as room #210A – which represents the date that this year’s champion will be announced. To mark this special annual occasion, the property has established a variety of onsite activities and amenities to coincide with the Show, including:

1) In association with the Westminster Kennel Club, the Hotel will host a live pre-show broadcast satellite feed from the Hotel’s Lobby with participants of the upcoming Westminster Dog Show. The pre-show feed will give an opportunity for different media market outlets to interview participants from their corresponding local market. The feed will take place in the Hotel Lobby on Friday, February 6th; Time 11 am to 2 pm EST.

2) The Hotel will host a NYC Celebrity Dogs Pre-Westminster Red Carpet Fashion Show and Awards on Friday February 6th at 7 pm EST on the 18th floor ballroom. The event will benefit the Animal Haven Shelter. The Fashion Show will feature designs for dogs from Ada Nieves.

3) The Hotel will again convert function space into what is perhaps the largest in-door doggie spa in all of New York. Located within the lower level of the Hotel, the 1st In-Line, Inc. sponsored Green Room Salon & S’paw’ offers a variety of amenities that Show participants require: bathing/beauty parlor/salon, dog grooming/comfort station, exercise area, walking area, and even his and hers relieving area.

There is also the famed Dog-tor’s Corner, which offers a canine masseuse
and an animal communicator!

4) As always, the Hotel will have its Doggie Concierge on-site working hard to attend to all canine requirements (such as handling ‘pup’arazzi interviews and tours) and a number of additional festivities and events ‘unleashed’ in time for the Westminster Dog Show.

5) The Paw Mall, located throughout and outside the Dog S’paw’, will feature all the latest toys and accessories for both owners and pets.

“We look forward to hosting all Westminster VIP’s (Very Important Pooches) for the 133rd Annual Westminster Dog Show – or 19th in dog years,” said Steve Leonard, Director of ‘Bark’eting at the Hotel. “Given our unique amenities and year-round pet-friendly accommodations, we are the ideal hotel for Westminster Dog Show guests and
year-round travelers with pets.”

Westminster is the oldest, continuous sporting event in America, with the exception of the Kentucky Derby. The Dog Show is the most prestigious of National Dog Shows and has been held every year despite power shortages, hazardous weather conditions,
economic depressions and World Wars.

Arden Grange Sled Dog Rally brings Gold to Aviemore

THE SIBERIAN Husky Club of Great Britain held another very successful Aviemore Sled Dog Rally in the Scottish Highlands on 24th and 25th January. With over 230 teams and 1,000 sled dogs taking part the 26th event, the weekend is now one of the biggest gatherings of its kind in the world.

The race is sponsored by Arden Grange and run in conjunction with Forestry Commission Scotland. It attracts over 3,000 spectators and is a welcome boost to the local economy, bringing in over £400,000 to local shops, restaurants and hotels.

Organiser Sarah Robinson said: ‘Mushers and their teams travel from all over the UK to compete in this race, which is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious of the Siberian Husky Club’s series of rallies. We would like to thank Arden Grange for their continued support. It is great to have their knowledgeable and friendly team of representatives at the race every year.’

The Arden Grange team - National Sales Manager, Neal Dobbin; Show Manager, Chris Mellor and Area Managers, Sue Hodgkiss and Jim Millar - have attended every year from the start of their involvement in 2007 and they consider the Aviemore Sled Dog Rally to be an unmissable event.

Neil said: ‘Many of the sled dogs are now fed on Arden Grange and the excellent results are there to be seen. Arden Grange pet foods are hypoallergenic and contain no wheat gluten, dairy products, beef or soya. Nor do they contain any artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives. None of our ingredients are genetically modified.’

Sarah Robinson also thanked the Forestry Commission Scotland for their help. She said: ‘The trails this year were very icy when we arrived and we are very grateful to the Forestry Commission Scotland Team for their non-stop work to ensure the trails were safe for the dogs, mushers and spectators.’

The 27th Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled Dog Rally will take place on 23rd and 24th January 2010.

Arden Grange will be attending Crufts 2009 Visit us in Hall 3A Stand 74. Take advantage of our show price offers and meet our friendly, helpful staff who will be delighted to assist with any nutritional queries you may have. www.ardengrange.com t: 01273 833 390 e: enquiries@ardengrange.com

Skinny dipping sue takes the plunge!

Known to OUR DOGS readers for her in depth articles on skin and coat condition, Sue Paterson our regular columnist is training hard for the London Marathon 2009.

Sue PatersonSue says

“Once again I will be running the London Marathon on April 26 th in aid of the Guide Dogs for the Blind. This will be my fourth London Marathon for the GDBA……. you would have thought I would have known better by now. However you only have to watch what a difference a Guide Dog makes to a visually impaired person to realise all the hours of training are worthwhile. It has been particularly miserable over the last few weeks running late at night after getting back from work in the freezing fog and snow. So if you were thinking of going down the pub for a swift drink this evening think of me pounding the streets and pledge the cost of your pint instead to GDBA.”

You can sponsor Sue at http://www.justgiving.com/susanpaterson2

OUR DOGS will bring you news of Sue’s progress. She has a target of £2000 but with the latest donations the running total has already reached £835.

Let’s hope OUR DOGS readers can give her and the charity a boost.
