Kennel Club defies Crufts protests
Crufts 5-8 March

Crufts logoTHE KENNEL Club has appealed for calm in the wake of rumours that Crufts is to be targeted by animal rights protestors, who say they anticipate a ‘significant’ amount of support.

Breeders and dog lovers planning to attend Crufts could be seen on several internet forums this week discussing the rumoured threat to disrupt the show. In the past there have been attempts made by animal rights activists trying to cause trouble inside the show, but each time they have been swiftly and efficiently dealt with by show officials and security staff.

In recent weeks a website called Veggies.org has added Crufts 2009 to its list of events and places where they expect a significant turnout of supporters.

‘Veggies’ appears to have links to PETA and the website features a video of the failed attempt to disrupt the AKC Westminster show. The video, which features three of the protesters dressed as members of the Klu Klux Klan (KKK), has been slammed for being in very bad taste,
somewhat diminishing the the protesters’ desired effect.

WILLIAM SECORD LAUNCHES
NEW BOOK AT CRUFTS

Everyone is invited to drop by the Kennel Club Library and Collections Stand at

Crufts between 10:30 and 11;30 am Hall 3 Stand 56, on Sunday, March 8

to meet William Secord, noted authority on dog painting,
who will be signing copies of his just-released book on the history of dog painting.

Dog Painting - A history of the dog in art
Dog Painting, A History of the Dog in Art is a magnificent volume, richly illustrated in full colour with over
525 paintings. It is a visual delight as well as an invaluable reference work that illustrates the changing breeds through history, a well as the many superb painters who specialised in dog painting.

Secord tells the story of the origins and development of dog painting and explains the various forces which emerged in 19th century England and America to create this golden age of dog painting. He goes on to define the dog’s role in continental art, pre-Victorian England and to describe the great influence of Queen Victorian’s example in the nineteenth century, and the market forces which created an unprecedented demand for dog paintings.

The author examines in depth a wide range of seventy-five breeds. Pets, show dogs and the sporting breeds are all given their due, including extensive sections on the more popular breeds, such as King Charles Spaniels, Pugs, Setters, Pointers and Labrador Retrievers.

As the noted authority on nineteenth century dog painting, Secord has virtually unlimited access to the world’s great collections of dog paintings. The Royal collections of Belgium, England and France are represented, as are those of the national kennel clubs of America and England. In all, paintings from twenty-five museums are included, as well as a wide variety of privately-owned paintings from America and Europe.

For more information on Dog Painting, please visit the William Secord Gallery web site, www.dogpainting.com, or email wsecord@dogpainting.com

Memories of his TV and theatrical career are explored in Here’s One I Wrote Earlier... but it is Peter’s memoirs of Crufts and his association with the dog world in general that OUR DOGS’ readers will no doubt be keen to read. Peter first started presenting Crufts Dog Show for the BBC in 1978, after an initial one-off appearance in 1976. Royal Opening for Kennel Club Building

HRH Prince Michael of Kent

Kennel Club president HRH Prince Michael of Kent

The Kennel Club’s president HRH Prince Michael of Kent officially opened the
new Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

The local dog training club from Leamington Spa provided displays of Heelwork to Music, Ringcraft, Flyball and Obedience. In addition there were
Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Puppy and Bronze displays.

The Valentine’s Day theme had not been lost with heart shaped
biscuits for canine visitors and heart shaped chocolates for owners!

Welcoming everyone to the official opening K C Educational Trust chairman Mr Gerald King explained that the trust was set up to provide opportunities
to educate the public about the joys and responsibilities of dog ownership.

The trust, he said, had been fortunate to find a permanent location in the heart of England after an historic agreement being the
Royal Agricultural Society of England and the Kennel Club.

As well as hosting shows - up to three at time - the venue is already booked to host educational seminars and judges’ development programmes throughout 2009.

The Our Dogs message board is going to be produced
'in house' from the end of this month.

You will be able to do all the normal message board activities including:
