The Heat Is On – Heading To California
Hundreds of spectators gathered around the densely packed Best In Show ring at the World Dog Show in Bratislava. With great excitement they watched the Eukanuba World Challenge Qualifying Heat take place just before the BIS winner title was awarded by FCI President, Hans Muller, to Jenny Hall’s “Northgate’s As You Like it” from Sweden. The Eukanuba World Challenge has become a high profile event in the three years since its inception. Hans Muller President of the FCI commented “This qualifying heat is a welcome addition and an important part of the competition and we are delighted that it is being held at the FCI World Dog Show».

Representing their selected countries from around Europe, 15 dogs were presented to 3 well known FCI all breed judges, Horst Kliebenstein from Germany, Rui Oliveira from Portugal and Espen Engh from Norway. From these 15, they selected 9 dogs which were then evaluated by FCI all breed judge, Stefan Sinko from Slovenia. Ultimately he selected 3 finalists, in no particular order. These three magnificent dogs have each secured a place to represent their country and compete in one of the four non geographical sections at the Eukanuba World Challenge 2009 in Long Beach, California, USA on 12th / 13th December. The event is hosted at the AKC / Eukanuba National Championship 125th Anniversary Show.

FCI General Committee Changes at General Assembly
Christofer HabigPreceding the World Dog Show, the FCI held its General Assembly in Bratislava. Two new members were voted by the membership onto the General Committee, Dr Tamas Jakkel and the new Vice President Mr Christofer Habig.

Christofer Habig says of his new appointment "Building on the spirit of change we jointly established two years ago in Acapulco, the FCI General Assembly in Bratislava again showed great confidence and the determination necessary to take this grand institution one step further. As many other delegates, I found this very encouraging. The FCI being the world's one and only global democratic dog fellowship, embracing more than 80 countries, many members are keen to move ahead with a steady modernization of their unique organization - and many people see considerable growth opportunities for the FCI, if this huge and diverse umbrella institution is ready to develop a punchy proposition behind its "For Dogs Worldwide" slogan. In light of that, it is definitely a great honour to have been asked to contribute to this challenging process."

Zbyszek Kalenik, External Relations, Eukanuba says “We are looking forward to seeing these three outstanding dogs compete in Long Beach where they will join many other great top winning dogs at the Eukanuba World Challenge 2009. Eukanuba is in an enviable position having a partnership of excellence with the FCI the AKC and a working relationship with many of the Kennel Clubs around the world. With the working co-operation of these organisations the Eukanuba World Challenge is established as a unique and major event in the world of dogs”.

Eukanuba Breeder Club Member, Olga Gorbatsjova, co-owner, co-breeder and handler of 3 year old female, Greyhound, Multi Ch “Estet Classic Glamorous” says “Glasha has won many many show titles but this has to be the highlight of her career so far, qualifying to represent our country at the Eukanuba World Challenge. Thank you to all the judges and to Eukanuba for this opportunity, for the excellent organisation, sincere support and all the help given. We are very proud to take part.” Eukanuba Breeder Club Member, Maja Golob, owner of the 4 year old male, Siberian Husky, Multi Ch “Tokima’s Northwest Passage” says “Clark is a very special dog. I am so pleased that he will be attending this incredible event”. Gregor Nemanic, handler “I am truly looking forward to handling this wonderful dog at the high profile Eukanuba World Challenge. For me this is a great honour”. Ivan Calleja, co-owner and handler of the 4 year old male Alaskan Malamute, Multi BIS, and Multi Champion “Sno Quest’s King Of Landwood” said of his win “I am so very happy. Can bacteria be good for your dog? Prebiotics have the answer.
Your dog's intestinal tract contains 65% of his immune system and is home to both healthy intestinal (Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria)and pathogenic (E.coli) bacteria, the balance of which is central to his health and well-being. We are aware that bacteria like E.coli can cause illness but bacteria like Lactobacilli and Bifi dobacteria are actually good for your dog. And now, the prebiotic FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) found in Eukanuba's super premium nutrition increases the number of healthy intestinal bacteria and decreases the number of pathogenic bacteria, and helps maintain a healthy balance in what is a complex internal ecosystem.

How do prebiotics work?
Prebiotics, like FOS, work by selectively encouraging the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifi dobacteria in a dog's digestive tract, and because prebiotics are preferentially broken down only by these healthy intestinal bacteria, they do not increase the levels of pathogenic bacteria like E.coli. In fact, the pathogenic bacteria levels actually decrease as a result of being crowded out by the healthy intestinal bacteria helping to maintain a healthier balance. As the digestive tract is a primary barrier against infection from the things he might swallow on a daily basis then helping maintain this defensive barrier is vital to your dog's well-being.

Bacteria IllustrationFeed as his nature intended
Having evolved as a carnivore, your dog is designed to eat and digest animal protein as his primary food source and has a highly specialized gastrointestinal system, or gut, to do so. His natural ancestor, the wolf, shares much of the same physiology, enabling it to process and derive nutritional and digestive benefi ts from the whole of the prey it consumes, helping maintain its immune system and well-being in the wild. Your dog's more refi ned diet, still rich in animal protein, is better suited to his domestic lifestyle but he still needs very special ingredients that help sustain his natural defenses, which is where prebiotics can help.

Good Health Starts from the Inside Out
In some ways the advancement of prebiotics for dogs, mirrors recent developments in human nutrition where we have seen a dramatic increase in the availability of foodstuffs with this healthy ingredient. Good health, it would seem, starts from the inside out for us and our dogs.

The clinically proven prebiotic FOS in Eukanuba helps strike the right balance between healthy intestinal and pathogenic bacteria in the gut, supporting strong natural defenses that help your dog be the best he can be.
